Members of the IUMS Executive Board met in Sapporo Japan on September 16 2009 with the organizers of the next IUMS Congress. Together with Prof. Fusao Tomita (Chair) and Prof. Sumio Shinoda (Vice Chair) of the National Organizing Committee they met the Vice mayor of the city of Sapporo, Mr Masaaki Ozawa and the Director general of the Dept of Policy, Planning and Coordination of the Hokkaido Government, Mr Kazunori Narita. Both the City of Sapporo and the Hokkaido are important sponsors of the 2011 Congress. In the afternoon of September 16 Rob Samson and Heinz Zeichhardt contributed to a minisymposium for the general public and this was very well attended. On September 19 the congress venues were inspected, The preparation of the Sapporo Congress is progressing well and the Executive Board is confident that the International Congresses for Bacteriology and Applied Microbiology, Mycology and Virology will be successful.

Executive Boards met in Amsterdam (17-18 April 2009)
The IUMS Executive Board met in Amsterdam for their annual meeting on 17 and 18 April 2009 in the Trippenhuis (Home of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences). During the meeting the President, Treasurer and Secretary General reported on their activities, while the chair of Virology, BAM and Mycology described the progress in their Divisions. Other important items on the Agenda were the relationships with ICSU and WHO. A new strategic plan to hold mini courses in developing countries concerning current actual problems in microbiology, e.g. new and emerging diseases, food safety, antimicrobial resistance and quality assessment of diagnostic laboratories was prepared. Dr Fusao Tomita, which was guest at this meeting, presented the progress of the three congresses to be held in 20111 in Sapporo.
